Telemetry and Power BI

Power BI and Business Central Telemetry

Connection

Login into PowerBI and select “Apps” on the left:

  

Once selected click on the “Get apps” button in the top right corner:




Search for “Dynamics 365 Business Central Usage” and click on the app that will be listed:



Once selected click on “Get It Now”. The app will install in your PowerBI account. It can take a few minutes:



When completed, you will see it listed in your “Apps” tab like this:



Click on the title to open the app. The data presented is sample data. We need to connect our App Insight to see the Telemetry data of the environment we chose. Select “Connect your Data” link highlighted in the screenshot to start the process.



The following window will open:



Open a new tab in your browser and go to the Azure Microsoft Portal. Search for “Application Insights”:



Select Application Insights and choose the one connected with the BC instance for which you enabled Telemetry. Once opened, in the left panel scroll down to the “Configure” section and find the “API Access”: 



Copy the value contained in the Application ID field that will show once the page is opened:



Paste that value in the “Application Insights application id” in the PowerBI tab and select a value for Lookback period (30 is a good start):



Press “Next” and in the next screen select “OAuth2” and click on “Sign in and connect” button:



Sign in using your account credentials in the window that will open and the installation will be complete.



It can take some time for the new data to show up in the PowerBI Application:

  

Permissions

Back in PowerBI, select “Workspaces” in the left panel:



Choose “Dynamics 365 Business Central” from the list:



Select “Manage Access”:



In the left panel click on “Add people or groups” to grant access to the Workspace and view the Telemetry data:
