Download and Install the Migration App

Download and Install the Migration App

The NAV SEAL Migration app is a free extension file (.app) that you download here and upload into your Business Central online environment; installing it takes about five minutes.

Once it's installed, see the article Data Migration to Business Central with NAV SEAL Migration to start your first migration project.

Info
Before you install

You need Business Central online version 28 or later and permission to manage extensions.

The app is a per-tenant extension: it is installed in one environment at a time. Install it separately in each sandbox and production environment where you want to use it.

Download the app

Download the latest version from this knowledge base and save the .app file somewhere you can find it.

  1. Select the Download link at the top of this article.
  2. Save the file. Its name includes the version number, for example NAV SEAL_NAVSEAL Migration_1.0.0.0.app.
  3. Keep the file as it is. Don't unzip or open it; Business Central needs the original .app file.

Always use the version from this knowledge base. It is the only version NAV SEAL supports.

Info
Install the app in Business Central

You upload the file on the Extension Management page, and Business Central installs it in the background.

  1. Sign in to the Business Central environment where you want the app, starting with your sandbox.
  2. Search for Extension Management (the magnifying glass, or Alt+Q) and open the page.
  3. Choose Manage, then Upload Extension.
  4. Under Select .app file, choose the file you downloaded.
  5. Set Deploy to to Current version.
  6. Read the disclaimer and turn on Accept.
  7. Choose Deploy.

The installation runs in the background and usually finishes within a few minutes. You can keep working while it runs.

Info
Check the installation and give users access

The app is ready when it shows as installed on Extension Management and your users have the permission set and the Data Migration profile.

Check the installation

  1. On Extension Management, choose Manage, then Deployment Status.
  2. Find the upload of NAV SEAL Migration. Completed means it's installed.
  3. Back on Extension Management, NAV SEAL Migration now appears with its version number and Is Installed turned on.

Give users access

  1. Search for Users and open each user who will run the migration.
  2. Under User Permission Sets, add the NAV SEAL Migration permission set (name to be confirmed).
  3. Assign the Data Migration profile, either on the user card or in the user's own My Settings.

Users who switch to the Data Migration profile see a role center with migration projects, files and progress.

Info
Update to a new version

To update, download the new version from this knowledge base and upload it the same way; your migration projects and data are kept.

  1. Download the new .app file.
  2. On Extension Management, choose Manage, then Upload Extension, and select the new file.
  3. Set Deploy to to Current version, turn on Accept and choose Deploy.
  4. Check Deployment Status until the upload shows Completed.

Avoid updating while migration jobs are running; let them finish first.

Update the sandbox first and check that your project still works before updating production.

Info
Uninstall the app

When the migration is finished, you can uninstall the app; whether its data is kept depends on one setting.

  1. On Extension Management, select NAV SEAL Migration.
  2. Choose Uninstall.
  3. Decide on Delete Extension Data:
    • Off: the migration projects, logs and history tables stay in the database, and come back if you install the app again.
    • On: all of the app's data is deleted permanently, including the migrated history tables.

The master data, journal lines and posted entries the app created in Business Central stay either way.

Keep the app installed if you migrated history. Sales, purchase, item and G/L history live in the app's own tables and are viewed through the app's pages. Uninstalling with Delete Extension Data turned on removes that history.

Info
Troubleshooting

Most installation problems come from permissions, the Business Central version or a changed file.
